Basic fish tank maintenance tips
The first thing you should do is make a check list of things that need to be done. The following is my check list:
Daily Check: Check all equipment for proper operation. look at the fishes and check for anything unusual, and verify the water temperature.
Weekly Check: Use your siphon to clean debris from the tank. This is a good time to change 25% of the water in your aquarium. Check ph level and ammonia level. When adding water be sure to adjust the water to match the chemistry of the aquarium (pH level and temperature).
Monthly Check: Clean filters, check hoses for ware and cracks. Check ph level and ammonia level.
Things needed for maintaining your aquarium.
There are three rules when speaking of disease in an aquarium:
The following are some common disease and what to do about them.
Fin-rot: Fins disintegrate and fin rays become inflamed. Cause is poor water quality or damaged fins.
Treatment - clean water, and spot treatment with gentian violet.
Gill Parasites: Scratching, heavy breathing (both are symptoms of poor water). In advanced cases there is heightened color, glazed eyes, and loss of motor controls. Usually caused by parasites introduced into the water.
Treatment - Sterazin which can be found in most pet stores.
Fungus: It is a white fluffy growth on the body and/or the fins. Usually caused by the damaged mucus coating due to attack or parasite.
Treatment - Spot treatment with gentian violet and for entire tank breakout use an aquarium fungicide treatment.
White Spot: These are tiny white spots on body and /or fins caused by the parasite ichthyopthirius.
Treatment - Use white spot remedy found in pet stores.
