Cold and Cough

No one likes it but a cold always seems to be around. Traveling from person to person on dirty hands, even air, it spares no one. The difficult thing is that there is no sure care to get rid of it. At best, various remedies can lessen the havoc caused by it. There are medicines, both homeopathic and allopathic well known to help ease cold and cough. Most of these are, however, not in a pediatricians’ list of recommendations.

●     To ease a sore little throat, the best remedy is a little ginger juice mixed with liberal doses of honey and a sprinkling of pepper. It is at once sweet and a great reliever.

●

●     The most important thing to remember when a little one is suffering from a sore throat is to ensure that no hard or solid foods go into the food. It is a heartbreaking sight to see a tiny one coping with a spasm of cough caused by something too cold, too spicy or a little hard.

●

●     For a running throat, the foremost thing to remember is to ensure that the runny nose doesn’t get sore. This can be done by softly applying a little baby oil or cream to the nose and the nostrils.

●

●     To wipe a runny nose, always use either a paper tissue or a very soft cloth napkin.

●

●     Blocked noses can be a nightmare for the baby as well as the parents. In the middle of the night, nothing is more pathetic than a little nose trying to blow or gasping for breath through the mouth.

●

●     There are a whole lot of decongestants in the market but again, not recommended for tiny ones. The best remedy here is a drop of lukewarm saline water (preferably boiled or distilled water) When put into the nose it effectively clears it and ensures steady breathing for a while at least. In a severely effected case, this might need to be done three or four times a night.

●

●     The baby needs to be kept as comfortable as possible, not tightly bound in warm clothes. A free circulation is necessary if the child is to feel comfortable in the already irritating state of cold.

The only thing to remember in a cold attack is, not to panic. It will anyhow take its own time, there’s no escaping it. So relax, after all its just a cold!
