Be a Great Grandparent

We all like to think that someone will remember us after we are gone, especially a grandchild. Grandparents are great role models and can be wonderful teachers. You can’t find a more attentive audience than grandchildren. They love the time and attention only a grandparent can give. Here are some ways that will insure that you will always be remembered:

●     Send constant reminders of yourself. A recent photograph doing something interesting, an audio tape with a book or frequent postcards.

●

●     Spend quality time really getting to know each of your grandchildren either in person or through letters. Ask questions that indicate that you are really interested. Buy a scrapbook so that the letters can provide a family history to be treasured years later.

●

●     Let your grandchildren know how important it is to you, that they were born. Show unconditional love and tell your grandchildren how great you think they are. Your approval can do wonders for a child’s self – image.

●

●     Try not to complain too much about your aches and pains; no one wants to be remembered for that.

●

●     Think about all the things that have been worthwhile in your life, the rituals and customs of the family, etc and share them with your grandchild. Teach them songs and holiday stories. These can be enjoyed and remembered for generations to come.

●

●     Spend time together talking, telling stories, sharing secrets, playing games exchanging favorite riddles and jokes.

●

●     Teach a grandchild how to knit or sew. Make a favourite mithai, paint a tee shirt, and embroider a chania choli for garba. Teach a craft or how to use some tools. The grandkids will love doing things with you.

●

●     Share the world of music to help your grandchild develop an appreciation for music. Go to a music concert or dance performance. A birthday gift could include tapes or a six-month trial period of lessons.

●

●     Periodic scheduled excursions to the nearest museum can lead to quality time with your grandchild. A subscription to a performing art series can be great for children of any age and can introduce a grandchild to the world of art and provide a lifetime enjoyment.

●

●     Be genuine. Be spontaneous. Do things with your grandchild because you want to, not because you feel like you have to. Make it fun for them to be with you. Several people have fond memories of their grandparents and feel that they were influential in their lives and choice of career. Margaret Mead, anthropologist, remembers and attributes her knowledge of the scientific method to her grandmother. Johnny Walker, the comedian, is said to claim that he got his love for singing from one of his grandpas and his grinning from the other.

So, in order that your grandchildren remember you, you have to be proactive and start work yourself. For starters, I am going to indulge my granddaughter by taking her out for her favourite movie, Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. She says that chap, “What is his name?” is her favourite. To be very honest, he is my favourite also, but why should I tell her?
